Bird Haven - Multiplication Common Core Instruction

Content Skill: Multiplication          Common Core State Standards: CCSS.Math.Content.3.OA.C.7 - Fluently multiply within 100, using strategies such as the relationship between multiplication and division or properties of operations.  By the end of Grade 3, know from memory all products of two one-digit numbers.


The game Bird Haven was designed to help kids understand the fundamentals of multiplication and to interpret the product of whole numbers.  In this game, students are presented with a number of bird cages each containing the same number of birds.  The instructions lead them through the understanding that these cages represent groups of objects each having the same number of items.

Bird Haven is specifically designed around Common Core State Standard 3.OA.1 and 3.OA.2 to help kids interpret products of whole numbers and interpret quotients of whole numbers.


Bird Haven Common Core 1 - Multiplication.comAfter the opening screen loads, click on ENTER to begin the game.
Bird Haven Common Core 2 - Multiplication.comChoose the fact families you would like to practice by clicking on the bird cages.  The cages will glow after they are selected.  To deselect a cage, just click on it again.
Bird Haven Common Core 3 - Multiplication.comThe Bird Haven game will begin.  First, choose a leaf from the branch representing how many cages there are.  (In this case, there are three cages, so drag the leaf with the 3 on it over to the box labeled cages.)

Next, drag the leaf corresponding to the number of birds in each cage.  In this case, there are 5 birds in each cage, so drag the 5 leaf over to the box labeled birds.
