Wouldn't it be fun to have your own cooking show? I have always thought so. Especially if my kitchen was magically that clean during the process and the meals always came out that flawless and beautifully plated!
We love to watch cooking shows at night. My family, husband and 3 kids included, like to watch chefs whip up their creation so effortlessly. My kids especially love "Iron Chef", the mystery ingredient is revealed and chefs race against the clock and their opponent to create dishes from the mystery ingredient.
My kids beg for "Iron Chef" nights at home, now and then I give in. For our most recent kids "Iron Chef" night they decided to give sushi a try. I usually stay pretty incognito and let them enjoy the full start to finish experience. Which is admittedly hard for this OCD helicopter mom! But, I must say, they do an amazing job!
For your sushi experience you will need:
- 4 cups rice prepared according to directions (brown, white, or sushi rice)
- 1/2 cup rice vinegar
- 1/4 cup white sugar
- 1 TBSP vegetable oil
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1 Avocado sliced thin
- 1 Cucumber sliced thin
- Imitation crab or smoked salmon sliced thin
- Soy Sauce
- Pickled Ginger
- 4-6 sheets of Nori
While the rice is cooking, mix the rice vinegar, sugar, salt, and oil together. Microwave or bring to a boil until sugar is dissolved. Pour mixture over cooled rice (you can even use leftover rice). Mix well, so each grain is coated. If you have a sushi mat, cover it with plastic wrap to make the rolling easier. Place one sheet of Nori on the sushi mat and place about 1/2 cup of rice on top and spread
evenly on Nori. Remember, the rice will not take up all the nori. You will tear the extra nori off.
According to my lovelies this is step one!
Once the rice is spread evenly on the nori, (tip: you don't want a thick layer of rice) place avocado, cucumber, and choice of smoked salmon or imitation crab close to the edge. If we are using smoked salmon, sometimes I add cream cheese. :)
Begin rolling sushi from the edge layered with your filling, be firm but do not press to hard! Voila! Tear off any extra nori. Using a sharp knife (insert parent here) cut sushi in half then each half into 3 pieces. All this measuring and cutting in half, a summer math lesson!
You are now ready to create another roll! Be creative, explore those combos and let me know what you find! If you like spicy. Try mixing 1/4 mayo and 2-5 tablespoons Sirachi!
