Bringing Down the Mouse by Ben Mezrich is a new book for middle schoolers that was inspired by the New York Times bestseller Bringing Down the House.
Charlie Lewis is no ordinary kid. He is so good at math that he has been given the nickname Numbers. It is too bad that the rest of the kids in Charlie's Middle School do not see his intelligence as a good thing! Charlie and his friends "The Whiz Kids" are constantly being picked on by bullies in their 6th grade class.
That is until Finn and Magic, two tough 7th graders start sticking up for Charlie. But their protection comes with a price. Finn and Magic enlist Charlie to join The Carnival Killers, a group of students led by an Algebra Teacher's Aid who use math to help cheat games at a local Carnival.
The Carnival Killers explain to Charlie that any Carnival Game can be won with "Math, Chemistry and a little Physics". And Charlie, they believe is the best one for the job.
Not just because you are good at math, but because you understand something important. You know that math isn't just something you learn in a classroom. You know that math is something you can use in real life.
It isn't long before Charlie realizes that The Carnival Killers are a much bigger organization than he thought and their target is much bigger than their local Carnival.
The Carnival Killers plan to travel to the country's largest amusement park, Incredo Land and beat their yearly contest and win the grand prize. The farther Charlie gets into the scheme, the more dangerous it becomes. People suddenly don't seem to be who they claim to be and circumstances no longer seem to be simply by chance.
Will Charlie go along with The Carnival Killer's Scheme?
Will he realize he is in danger before it's too late?
Students will love this exciting book, and teachers will love the logic, mathematics and problem solving Charlie uses along the way. This is one of the best Math inspired books for Middle Schoolers I have ever read! The exciting and thrilling plot will keep your students coming back for more!
