FREE Holiday Math War Worksheets

Have you ever played the card game War?  There is also a multiplication version that you can buy or use with a plain deck of playing cards.  Here is a short video showing how to play it:

If you want a way to propel your students through a whole page of math problems without any real sort of complaining at all, I suggest you download these sets of free worksheets right away!   I used these exact worksheets in my classroom last Spring and I had kids begging (begging!) to stay after the bell to keep playing.  It was awesome to see kids having fun with math problems.  These free holiday math war worksheets will help your students master addition, subtraction, multiplication AND division! Pairs of kids will need 1 deck of cards and their own set of worksheets.

If you are already in the throes of division, a great idea is to give all kids a division math war worksheet packet (set of 3) and it will give your students the division refresher they need by first allowing them to practice single-digit division into double-digit division, then on to double-digit division, and then finally to triple-digit division!

What I particularly love about Math War, is that kids don't necessarily have to be the class brain to win these games.  Yes, kids do need to utilize their problem solving skills to complete the problems, but in the end it's the chance of the deck that determines the winner....anyone can win!  In this way, it is ideal for classroom settings, home school groups, and more!  In the above photo, my 4th grade daughter ended up winning against her 6th grade sister.  What's more, is that each packet of war worksheets comes with alternative ways to play:  High Score, Low Score, Sum More Fun, Lucky Number 7, and Black-Out.  So, when your students tire of the normal way to play, there are lots of other ways to have problem-solving fun.  With the Black-Out variation, more than 2 players can play together.
