Using Your Fingers

Step 1

Put your hands on the table in front of you.

Step 2

Your fingers represent the numbers 1 through 10.

Step 3

  • Each finger to the left of the curled finger represents 10. 
  • Since one finger is to the left of the curled finger, there is 1 ten or 10.  (The first number of the answer is 1)
  • Each finger to the right of the curled finger represents one.  
  • Count 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 .  (Or 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18)  
  • 2 x 9 = 18

Doubling

  • Another trick to remember the TWOs is doubling
  • 9 doubled is 18 (9 + 9 = 18)

Skip Counting

  • Skip counting is counting while skipping one or more numbers.  To skip count by 2's, skip a number while counting.  (2...4...6...8...)  Many refer to this a "counting by 2's
  • 2 x 9 is skip counting nine times or 2...4...6...8...10...12...14...16...18 and you are at the answer
